Additionally, for the management and administration concerning your health, hygiene, and safety. - การปฏิบัติตามกฎหมาย (Legal Obligation) - การป้องกันหรือระงับอันตรายต่อ ชีวิต ร่างกาย หรือสุขภาพบุคคล (Vital Interests) 1.12 เพื่อป้องกันและรักษาความปลอดภัยในเรื่องเกี่ยวกับ สุขภาพของท่าน เช่น โรคประจ าตัว การแพ้อาหาร to protect and maintain safety concerning your health (e.g. medical condition, food allergies). - การป้องกันหรือระงับอันตรายต่อ ชีวิต ร่างกาย หรือสุขภาพบุคคล (Vital Interests) - ความยินยอม (Consent) ในบางกรณีโรงเรียนอาจมีการเก็บรวบรวม ใช้ และเปิดเผยข้อมูลส่วนบุคคลของบุคคลในครอบครัว ทั้งนี้ โรงเรียนเก็บรวบรวม ใช้ และเปิดเผยข้อมูลของบุคคลเหล่านั้น โดยอาศัยฐานทางกฎหมายต่าง ๆ เพื่อวัตถุประสงค์ ดังต่อไปนี้ In some cases, KMIDS may collect, use, and disclose personal data of the person in the family. And KMIDS may require you to verify the data that you gave. Privacy Notice No. HR_01_001 Date: 1 June 2022 8 (5) ข้อมูลส่วนตัวอื่น ๆ (Other personal data) เช่น ประวัติการท างานและการศึกษารวมถึงหลักฐานที่เกี่ยวข้อง สถานภาพการเกณฑ์- ทหาร ข้อมูลบุคคลอ้างอิง สถานภาพการสมรส ประวัติการอบรม ประวัติการฝึกงาน ประวัติการเข้าร่วมกิจกรรม หนังสือเดินทาง (Passport) ใบอนุญาตท างาน (Work- permit) วีซ่า (VISA) หนังสืออนุญาตให้ชาวต่างประเทศประกอบวิชาชีพครูโดยไม่มี ใบอนุญาตประกอบวิชาชีพ ใบอนุญาตประกอบวิชาชีพครู ใบอนุญาตขับขี่ ภาพถ่าย วิดีโอหรือเสียงในระหว่างที่สอน หรือร่วมกิจกรรมของโรงเรียน such as the history of work and education including relevant evidence, military training status, data of the person of reference, marital status, training records, internship records, attendance activity records, Passport, Work- permit, VISA, Temporary Teaching Permit for Foreign Teachers, The teaching license, driving license, photo or video or voice during class or examination or KMIDS activities; (6) ข้อมูลระบุตัวตนของบุคคลในครอบครัว (บิดา มารดา คู่สมรส บุตร) ได้แก่ ชื่อ นามสกุล วัน เดือน ปีเกิด เพศ อายุ อาชีพ เป็นต้น Identity data of the person in the family (father, mother, spouse, and child) such as first name, last name, date of birth, gender, age, occupation, etc. 2.2 ข้อมูลส่วนบุคคลที่เป็นข้อมูลอ่อนไหว (Sensitive personal data) โดยทั่วไปแล้ว โรงเรียน ไม่มีความประสงค์จะเก็บรวบรวมและใช้หมู่โลหิตที่ปรากฏอยู่ในส าเนา บัตรประจ าตัวประชาชนของท่านเพื่อวัตถุประสงค์ใดโดยเฉพาะ หากท่านได้มอบส าเนาบัตรประจ าตัวประชาชน ให้แก่โรงเรียน ขอให้ท่านปกปิดข้อมูลดังกล่าว หากท่านมิได้ปกปิดข้อมูลข้างต้น ถือว่าท่านอนุญาตให้ โรงเรียน ด าเนินการปกปิดข้อมูลเหล่านั้น และถือว่าเอกสารที่มีการปกปิดข้อมูลดังกล่าว มีผลสมบูรณ์และบังคับใช้ได้ตาม กฎหมายทุกประการ ทั้งนี้ หาก โรงเรียน ไม่สามารถปกปิดข้อมูลได้เนื่องจากข้อจ ากัดทางเทคนิคบางประการ โรงเรียนจะเก็บรวบรวมและใช้ข้อมูลดังกล่าวเพื่อเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเอกสารยืนยันตัวตนของท่านเท่านั้น In general, KMIDS has no intention to collect and use blood type data specified in your identification card for any specific purpose . Whereby the school had to make the personal data readable or generally useable with tools or materials which functioned automatically and were able to disclose personal data automatically. INNOVATOR Scientia Est Potentia - “Knowledge is Power” December 2019 Volume 1 MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Greetings KMIDS Families, Welcome to the first KMIDS newsletter! The “Innovator” is our new way of communicating with the KMIDS community. We believe that the success of every student begins with a strong partnership be - tween home and school, and we hope that this monthly newsletter will help us to establish that. I am enjoying my first year as Director, and we have had an excel - lent start to the school year. Our innovative Pathway Program has proven to be a great innovation, and our Senior Class, the first in school history, has already achieved fantastic results in gaining ear- ly acceptance to university. In addition, our many robotics teams continue to excel, with our national championship WRO team com- peting in Hungary, and with teams competing in Taiwan and Japan in the very near future. The KMIDS family has shown its strength and commitment to the school by helping us with Open House activities, in attending Par - ent-Teacher conferences in large numbers, and in supporting our extracurricular and academic programs. The results of these tests inform classroom instruction and help shape KMIDS curriculum. In January, high school students will take the first of two rounds of TOEFL ITP tests, giving the students, parents, and the school important information on the progress and attainment in English of individual students. For grades 7, 8, and 9 students, reading comprehension and vocabulary will be measured through the iReady diagnostic test. Students who score below proficiency on the iReady test will be required to complete two-hours of online lessons a week until they have reached grade-level reading comprehension. Middle school students will also sit for the MAP Science Growth assessment in January. Lastly, all students, except seniors, will take the mid- year writing assessment in their ELA classes. Parents are encouraged to visit their child’s teachers or Mr. Marc to discuss the results of these mid-year assessments. According to Lily, she didn’t have to look far for inspiration: “I was motivated by my friends to study harder.” She believed that if they could earn A’s, she could too. Only first she needed to become more responsible, especially with regard to time management. To Lily, this means “not to rush everything,” but rather “make a plan and take time with it.” By winning this scholarship, she is motivated to perform even better, as well as to inspire others to do the same by being more responsible. TCAS Round 1 Open December 2nd Looking Ahead SAT Deadlines Test Centers Fully Booked Round 1 for the Thai University Center Admission System, known as TCAS, will open on December 2nd and close on December 15th. There are a few changes to the system this year that are very important: • Students can apply to as many universities as they want during this round • If admitted, students can choose only one university to attend and must confirm their choice through TCAS by January 31st • Declining an admission offer that you previously confirmed can only be done once. • Students should follow the announcement for specific details from the faculty and university they wish to attend*. December 5 - Father’s Day, No classes December 10 - Constitution Day, No classes, Friday, December 20 - Quarter 2 ends & KMIDS Winter Festival December 21- January 5 - Winter Break - No School Did you know that the December SAT test was fully booked well before the deadline? In recent months, the SAT closed testing centers in neighboring countries, and many of those students are now traveling to Thailand to take this very important test. Dialogue in the Dark (DID) is an awareness-raising exhibition where students experience how blind people interact in the real world by using their other senses. The key objectives are to raise awareness for diversity and inclusion for people who are referred to as “disabled,” and to create a collaborative environment that encourages leadership and teamwork for students. One of these activities is our annual Christmas Gathering on December 10th. Our Christmas Gathering will include dinner and a simple gift exchange. 01 02 December 21st – January 3d Dorm Closing Dates The dorm will be closed starting 21 December 2019 until 3 January 2020. Students are allowed to stay at the dorm until 10 pm on 20 December or 12 pm on 21 December. The dorm will be re-opened on 4 January at 1:00pm Reminders Any form of electronic games (Play Station, Nintendo Switch, Xbox) are not allowed to be brought to the dorm. Also, as stated in the dorm rules, students must inform their parents before going out of the Latkrabang area. KMIDS_Quixotic, composed of Chaowanon Srisilpa (Bank), Issara Netsuwan (Jew) and Wikrom Thamchareonkit (Ping), joined the Thai- land delegation to compete in this year’s international finals. The team also had the opportunity to visit Prague and Vienna before the start of the competition. ALL Japan Robot - Sumo Team On September 20 - 22, 2019. the KMIDS Robotics Team joined the All Thailand FSI and World Robot Sumo Tournament 2019 held at The Hub @ Zeer Rangsit, Bangkok, Thailand. About 200 students from different schools in Thailand participated in this competition, and only six students could qualify in the next level of the competition. Kunpisit Sinpaisarnsup, Toffy (G12) and Sorawich Lapanaphan, Pond (G9) placed 3rd in the Mega Sumo RC Category and won the qualifying round, securing their place to represent KMIDS and Thailand in the All Japan Robot-Sumo Tournament 2019 International Finals in Tokyo, Japan On December 12 - 17, 2019. World Robot Olympiad 2019 International Finals Page 12 Page 13 Scientia Est Potentia - “Knowledge is Power” WRO THAILAND 2019 The Results WRO INTERNATIONAL 2019 King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang International Demonstration School (KMIDS) took home top awards in the recently concluded World Robot Olympiad 2019 (WRO) Thailand National Finals held at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL). About 500 students from more than 100 different schools in Thailand participated in the competition. A total of 13 teams (35 students) from Grade 7 to 12 represented KMIDS. The theme for this year’s WRO National Championship was “SMART Cities.” In the event, students not only built robots using different programs, including the Lego EV3 program, but also integrated the three themes of SMART Cities (Smart Education, Smart Workplace and Smart Governance) into their projects and designs. These robots were programmed to solve some of society’s most pressing challenges. The KMIDS_Quixotic team, composed of Chaowanon Srisilpa (Bank), Issara Netsuwan (Jew) and Wik- rom Thamchareonkit (Ping), emerged victorious in the Senior Open Category. They won first place and are now national champions. The Organergy team, composed of Pichaya Pichayadecha (Candy), Sakditouch Pukkanasut (Tiger) and Tanaporn Anurakwongsri (IngIng), brought home 2nd Place in the Junior Open Category, The COLDCHAN (Chaowpawee Chotibunt, Kaampoo and Warit Luangnateetape, View) and G-Robos- orter (Jirapatra Prasert, Tonnum, Ming Tan and Poonnachote Kaewsuwan, Poon) teams did us proud by winning 3rd Place in the Senior and Junior Open Category respectively. Page 14 Page 15 Scientia Est Potentia - “Knowledge is Power” LOY KRATHONG CELEBRATION We had a fantastic Loy Krathong Celebration on the 8th of November. During this event, we demonstrated our gratitude for the benefits that water brings to our lives and our country. Everyone enjoyed floating the Krathong , dressing up in various Thai costumes, and watching Thai traditional dancing and boxing, which were performed by our amazing students. It was a wonderful celebration. THAI DEPARTMENT 2019 Loy Krathong at KMIDS UPCOMING EVENT The Father’s Day ceremony will be held on the 4th of December to honor His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the father of the Thai Nation. The KMIDS director will be preside over the ceremony, followed by the Royal Anthem, a student’s speech about the meaning and the importance of Father’s Day and the devotion to His Majesty to the nation. We will close the ceremony with a contemporary dance to the musical compositions of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. SEISMOLOGY CLUB One of the first things that I do every morning upon entering my classroom is to check the monitor for my seismograph. On the morning of November 21, 2019, I immediately noticed that a large seismic event had occurred. After accessing the data through the United States Geological Society (USGS), I realized that the event was a strong earthquake measuring in a magnitude of 5.7 on the border between northern Thailand and northwest Laos. While I was in the process of analyzing this data, a second more powerful earthquake measuring in a magnitude of 6.1 occurred in the same location. Damage in the northern regions of Thailand were reported. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and damage does not appear to be serious in nature. However, these seismic events, especially the larger earthquake, were felt as far down as Bangkok, The Mae Chan Fault runs east-west from the northern part of Thailand, leading into Western Laos and is part of a parallel series of faults resulting from the northern motion of the Indian Plate, The seismology monitor located at KMIDS registers the November 21st earthquake in Chiang Mai. the Indo-Australian Plate, and southern motion of China. This fault is believed to be capable of producing a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, so these recent earthquakes should not be considered rarities. By Michael Brunt Page 16 Page 17 Scientia Est Potentia - “Knowledge is Power” SCIENCE @ KMIDS “It has been a busy semester in the Sci - ence Department! Students across the grade levels have completed many hands- on activities in the classroom and lab, gain- ing many important skills for the future.” For example, 7th grade students are studying waves and have performed a laser lab for exploring light waves and a tuning fork lab for sound waves. Grade 8 students have investigated elements in the peri- odic table and produced excellent presentations. In High School Science, Grade 9 and 10 Biology stu- dents have been working on their microscope skills as well as investigating macromolecules and effects of enzyme activity. SCIENCE LAB ACTIVITY Students learned that flame color is a unique property of each positive ion. Now, it’s time to make beautiful can- dles. Science Electives In the elective classes, many exciting experiments have also been carried out. Biology students studying animal and plant physiology are learning how to dissect, trying their hand at dissecting pig hearts, flowers and even chicken wings! In Chemistry, students carried out flame tests to investigate the colors given out by compounds. And finally in Physics, G10 students are writing a lab report to determine if the surface area or mass of an object affects the frictional force. Page 18 Page 19 Scientia Est Potentia - “Knowledge is Power” STEM Happenings Grade 7 STEM students researched the different opportunities and careers in robotics and cre- ated PowerPoint presentations and promotional posters advertising their choice of career. Grade 8 STEM students researched and collated data on the types of sensors found in iPhones and the importance and use of sensors in all aspects of modern life, including in the home, in medicine, and in new technologies. GRADE 9 STEM The Grade 9 students learned in STEM with Robotics how to program the EV3 robot to use arrays to store multiple data variables. They wrote coding for the robot to scan bars using color sensors. The code enable the robot to convert the bars into letters and display the words on the screen. The stu- dents have now an in-depth understanding of binary values and even wrote messages to their friends using binary values. This was a fun and hands-on unit and gave some very interesting insight into bar- codes. GRADE 12 STEM In their IoT class G12 students’ goal was to connect a chat bot app and an internet-enabled capacitive sensor. So when your loved one touches the sensor, you receive a heart emoji. Meanwhile, G11 students’ learning target was to automate the robotic inspection of a pipeline. Doing so, students developed a deeper under- standing of the role of functions in solving complex problems. The following is a synopsis of the book: “ It has been nearly a hundred years since humans won the Great War, defeating the orcs by industry and innovation--not magic, as everyone had expected. Orcs and elves have been pushed into the corners of society. But in those dark corners, old hatreds are starting to simmer, and some humans are wondering whether it’s time to snuff out magic and all that goes with it once and for all.” Please give his book a read! After high school he joined the Marines and served four years as part of the security battalion for Marine One. After his service ended, he went off to college to get his degree in history and a high school teaching credential. Since then he has worked in Ukraine, Kuwait, and China as well as the United States. Through it all, writing has been his passion. His most recent work, Millennium Stone, was awarded Editor's Choice by iUniverse and was received with praise. Now Jacob has moved into the realm of adult fantasy fiction, combining his unique experience as an interna - tional history teacher with powerful storytelling. The Social Studies Department is small but very committed to providing the best possible learning environment possible. Our team members are Jake Hicks, who teaches grade 9 and grade 11 history; Jake Emrey, who teaches grade 9 history, grade 10 history, and grade 12 Economics; and Bob Teusch, who teaches Grade 7 Geography and grade 8 Ancient History. We have made the decision to incorporate project-based learning and collaborative groups into the weekly social studies lessons. We feel this not only enhances the academic part of learning, but also teaches students vital skills they will need for the work world they will enter after their education is completed. I would like to use this opportunity to inform you about the performance of the English department in Quarter One and Quarter Two. Both quarters have been busy, and KMIDS students explored a lot of challenging topics in their English Literature classes and their English Language Arts classes. Below you’ll find some of the titles students are reading. The English department also enjoyed a bit of fun. In October, all students in the school took part in the Wonderful Week of Words competition. The competition was divided into four parts: the best bookmark, the best English meme, the best poem, the best book cover and the best book character costume. The results were fantastic! Grade 7 Pre-Algebra is currently work- ing on percentages, ratios, and proportions. Grade 8 Algebra 1 is studying slope of linear equations and the special conditions of parallel and perpendicular lines. In Grade 9, our Geometry students are ex- ploring triangle congruency theorems. Our Grade 10 Algebra 2 students are busy finding solutions to polynomial equations. In Grade 11 Pre-calculus, stu- dents are learning to graph advanced trigonometric functions. The Grade 12 students who are studying AP Calculus are learning to use derivatives to find optimal solutions to real-world problems. KMIDs math students will compete in two outside competitions this year: The International Math Chal- lenge IX in February, and the SASMO Competition in the Spring. The Mathematics Department looks forward to an exciting time ahead! RISING TO CHALLENGES KMIDS 8th Grade Advanced Algebra Class “RISING TO CHALLENGES” RISING TO CHALLENGES—this is second nature to our KMIDS students. But, now, the challenge was not in the classroom—it was not even a STEM or ROBOTICS Seminar in Thailand or some other country. It wasn’t a Math Olympiad Competition. No, this challenge was in athletics! In September, Mr. Tillo challenged his Advanced Algebra Math Class, also known in some academic circles as Algebra Honors, to something above and beyond what a class of highly-gifted academic achievers nor- mally do…..He challenged them to a running race! The venue: The Mini-Marathon at the 2019 Bangkok Marathon on No- vember 17, 2019! 10.55 kilometers of running at 4 in the morning. When he put the challenge to them in class that day, the response was deafening—absolute silence! But with a few choice words and overcom- ing the easy objections, they began the 2-month training regimen of “road work” at the KMITL sports track. And the rest is history! Two months later, at the actual race, 14 out of 16 students in the class were in attendance and the two who were absent had prior commit- ments. Is that dedication and perseverance or what? Congratulations to the scholar-athletes: Mee-pooh, Chuck, Pantai, Au- gust, Punch, Best, JingJang, Tonnam, Tonnum, Son, Kevin, PJ, Obo, and Ming—GREAT JOB. 49th International Chemistry Olympiad - KMIDS

KMIDS students had the opportunity to attend the 49th International Chemistry Olympiad in Thailand; Chemistry Talk Series today at Faculty of Science, Mahidol University.
